Bandits Attack Governor Ganduje’s Convoy.

Gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked the convoy of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State on Tuesday night. At least three policemen sustained injuries in the attack which happened after the convoy was making its way to Kano from Zamfara State, where a mass All Progressives Congress (APC) rally held on Tuesday. Ganduje was among the governors, who visited Gusau, Zamfara capital, to welcome Governor Bello Matawalle and key Zamfara politicians who defected into the ruling party. Government House sources confirmed the attack but said Ganduje was not in the convoy when they encountered the gunmen. It was gathered that Ganduje joined the convoy of his Jigawa State Counterpart, Abubakar Badaru, after the mega rally in Gusau. “You know because the place was rowdy after the event which had many state governors in attendance, His Excellency, Gov Ganduje, joined his friend, Governor Badaru, and they both arrived in Kano hours before the Kano convoy arrived,” a government house official, who...

END TIME:Spain on path to legalizing gender self-identification.

Image
MADRID, June 29 – The Spanish government on Tuesday approved the draft of a bill to allow anyone over the age of 14 to change gender legally without a medical diagnosis or  hormone therapy , the Equality Ministry said. The draft bill, which will go to a public hearing before another reading in the cabinet and a vote in the lower house of parliament, removes the requirement for two years of hormone therapy and a psychological assessment to switch gender in official records. “This is an historic day after more than 15 years without any legislative progress,” Equality Minister Irene Montero told a news conference. “We send a strong message for the protection of LGBTI people,” she said, referring to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community. The “self-ID” draft bill sets age limits, with 14- to 16-year-olds needing parental approval, after parliament’s rejection in May of a proposal from a group of political parties to give children total freedom to lega...

Russia Accused of Threatening Dutch warship Again.

Image
Russia has downplayed claims from the Dutch authorities that there was "no justification whatsoever" for the "aggressive act". Dutch authorities say Russian fighter jets armed with air-to-surface missiles threatened one of their navy ships in the Black Sea. The Dutch Defence Ministry said  Russian  fighter jets repeatedly flew low over the ship and carried out "mock attacks" off the coast of Crimea last week. The Dutch ship Evertsen had been patrolling the area alongside HMS Defender. Russia said the British ship was  forced to flee  the area last week after their warships fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs. Britain has denied that account and insisted the ship wasn't fired upon. Dutch defence minister Ank Bijleveld-Schouten called the Russian actions against the Evertsen "irresponsible." "Evertsen has every right to sail there," she said. "There is no justification whatsoever for this kind of aggressi...

Britain Bans Binance's UK Operations In Latest Cryptocurrency Crackdown.

Britain's financial regulator has said Binance, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, cannot conduct any regulated activity and issued a warning to consumers about the platform, which is coming under growing scrutiny globally. In a notice dated June 25, the  Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said Binance Markets Ltd, Binance's only regulated UK entity, "must not, without the prior written consent of the FCA, carry out any regulated activities... with immediate effect". It also issued a warning to consumers about Binance Markets and the wider Binance group. Binance said in a statement that Binance Markets, which it acquired in 2020, was not yet using its regulatory permissions, and that the FCA's move would not impact services offered on its Binance.com website. "We take a collaborative approach in working with regulators and we take our compliance obligations very seriously. We are actively keeping abreast of changing policies, rules and la...

Health Secretary Matt Hancock resigns after admitting breaching social distancing guidance.

Image
In a letter to  Prime Minister Boris Johnson  he says the government "owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we have let them down as I have done by breaching the guidance." In his letter of resignation, Mr Hancock said: “The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis. “I want to reiterate my apology for breaking the guidance, and apologise to my family and loved ones for putting them through this. I also need (to) be with my children at this time.” Former Chancellor and Home Secretary Sajid Javid will replace Mr Hancock as Health Secretary, Downing Street has announced. In a tweet, Mr Javid said he is "honoured to have been asked to serve as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care at this critical time" and added he looks forward to "serving my country from the Cabinet once again." Israeli Military Shoots Down Drones With Laser Technology Mounted On Aircraft.

Image
The Israeli military used a plane armed with a high-powered laser to intercept and shoot down unmanned aircraft in flight in a first-of-its-kind test for the Israeli armed forces, which are constantly searching for new ways to counter airborne threats such as rockets and drones from Gaza and elsewhere. The High-Power Laser Weapon System was installed on an aircraft equipped with advanced sensors and tracking systems and used to engage multiple drones at various ranges and altitudes. During testing, conducted last week by the Israeli Ministry of Defense and the local defense firm Elbit Systems, the aircraft "successfully intercepted and destroyed 100% of the UAVs launched during the test," the defense ministry said. The Israeli Ministry of Defense tweeted that Israel is "among the first countries in the world to demonstrate such capabilities." The armed forces released a video of the testing. This is the first phase in a multi-year program to develop an advanced airb...

Florida building collapse: One dead, 99 unaccounted for.

A high-rise oceanfront apartment block near Miami Beach partially collapsed early Thursday, killing at least one person and leaving 99 unaccounted for, with fears the toll may rise much higher as rescuers combed through the rubble. An unknown number of residents are feared to have been asleep in the 12-story building, in the town of Surfside, when the overnight collapse reduced a large portion of it to rubble, exposing the interiors of gutted apartments. “One side of the building just fell completely. It doesn’t exist anymore,” said Nicolas Fernandez, 29, an Argentinian resident of Miami who had yet to hear from friends who were staying overnight in his family’s unit in the building. “I don’t know about them. I don’t know if they are alive,” he told AFP. Police said they were still without news of 99 people who may have been inside the apartment block at the time it collapsed. “That could be for different reasons, we’re still in the early stages,” Freddy Ramirez, director of the Miami-...

Condemnation builds over deadly government airstrike in Tigray.

Image
International condemnation is growing over an  airstrike  that killed dozens of people in Ethiopia's war-torn northern Tigray region earlier this week, as Africa's second-most populous nation  tallied ballots  to decide its next leader. At least 30 people died on Tuesday when a government airstrike hit a busy marketplace in the small town of Togoga, west of the regional capital Mekele, as fighting intensified between Tigray's ruling party, the TPLF, and forces aligned with Ethiopia's military, eyewitnesses and medics told CNN. The airstrike marked one of the deadliest attacks in an eight-month war that has fueled famine, forced millions to flee and severely damaged the reputation of Ethiopia's Nobel Peace Prize-winning Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Abiy touted the national and regional elections -- a vote he described as "witnessing the atmosphere of democracy," though millions of Ethiopians could not cast their ballots -- in an attempt to distrac...

Russia Boasts It Fired Warning Shots And Dropped BOMBS At Royal Navy Warship - Foreign Affairs.

Moscow claimed a Russian patrol ship and warplane were scrambled after Royal Navy destroyer HMS Defender crossed into its territorial waters near Crimea in the Black Sea. Officially, the UK is playing any suggestion of a confrontation with the Russians. The Ministry of Defence has insisted warship was simply conducting an "innocent passage" through Ukrainian waters. But a different and more dramatic picture has been painted by a BBC news crew on board the 8,500 ton warship who say they heard shots fired. The BBC reported that at times there were as many as 20 aircraft buzzing the warship and the sound of jets roaring overhead could be heard. Russian media also reports a much more dramatic version of events, saying the SU-24M aircraft dropped four bombs on the course of the warship. And a security source confirmed to the The Sun: "It’s basically pretty much as the Russians had it. We’re just not giving them the attention they crave.” The incident is the latest clash betwe...
