FEAR IN ITALY:AS DROUGHT PERSIST.

Image
The main artery that cuts through Italy's heartland, where 30% of its food is produced, is the 650-kilometer-long (400-mile-long) River Po, which winds its way from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea on Italy's northeast coast. But a dry winter and spring mean this year it's in trouble. But in 2022, things are very different. An unusually dry winter meant snow melt was scarce and spring rains only sporadic, which has led to the worst drought in the northern regions of Italy in more than 70 years, a regional agency for the River Po confirmed. And that is a big problem for the millions of people who rely on the Po for their livelihoods. Salination from the Adriatic Sea has started turning its fresh water into unusable poison for crops. Recent samples show salt water more than 20 kilometers (12 miles) inland, and as the river drops lower, the sea will continue to fill the void. Researchers tap into paralysed man's brain and display his speech on a screen in a world first.

Image
For the first time researchers have used brain waves of a paralysed man who is unable to speak and have turned them into sentences on a computer screen. The study, which will require more years of research, marks a monumental step in allowing more natural communication for people who can't talk due to illness or injury. Dr Edward Chang, a neurosurgeon at University of California who led the work, said: “Most of us take for granted how easily we communicate through speech. "It’s exciting to think we’re at the very beginning of a new chapter, a new field” to ease the devastation of patients who lost that ability." Those who cannot speak or write due to paralysis currently have limited ways of communicating. The man in the experiment, who has not been identified for privacy reasons, usually uses a pointer attached to a hat that lets him move his head to touch words or letters on a screen. Other devices can pick up eye movements, but it can be a frustrating and slow substitut...

Recovery workers battled poor weather Saturday as they continued to search for the victims of the Florida building collapse. The death toll rose to 86, Miami Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a press conference, announcing that six more bodies were found in the rubble overnight. So far, 62 victims have been identified, and 43 people are still missing. Poor weather was expected to continue Saturday as storms hovered off South Florida’s coast. The recovery effort was paused early Saturday, but resumed after gusty winds died down. Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said the progress on the pile was “intense,” and the site may be cleared sooner than expected, though he didn’t have a projection for when the work would be finished. “Much of the original pile is now at ground level or below,” Burkett said.

Image
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has urged President Muhamadu Buhari administration to make a conscientious effort to arrest bandits and Miyetti Allah militias terrorising the country, with the same vigour it went after separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu. Mr Wike noted that despite the differences Rivers government had with Mr Kanu, the rule of law and due process must be followed in his arrest and prosecution. The governor further urged the federal government to ensure all terrorists on its watchlist regardless of their ethnicity or religion are arrested and made to face the wrath of the law. “We must not make hullabaloo about the prosecution of Nnamdi Kanu. I don’t agree with his principle. I have come out and said you cannot annex my state to be your own. Bandits Attack Governor Ganduje’s Convoy.

Gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked the convoy of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State on Tuesday night. At least three policemen sustained injuries in the attack which happened after the convoy was making its way to Kano from Zamfara State, where a mass All Progressives Congress (APC) rally held on Tuesday. Ganduje was among the governors, who visited Gusau, Zamfara capital, to welcome Governor Bello Matawalle and key Zamfara politicians who defected into the ruling party. Government House sources confirmed the attack but said Ganduje was not in the convoy when they encountered the gunmen. It was gathered that Ganduje joined the convoy of his Jigawa State Counterpart, Abubakar Badaru, after the mega rally in Gusau. “You know because the place was rowdy after the event which had many state governors in attendance, His Excellency, Gov Ganduje, joined his friend, Governor Badaru, and they both arrived in Kano hours before the Kano convoy arrived,” a government house official, who...

END TIME:Spain on path to legalizing gender self-identification.

Image
MADRID, June 29 – The Spanish government on Tuesday approved the draft of a bill to allow anyone over the age of 14 to change gender legally without a medical diagnosis or  hormone therapy , the Equality Ministry said. The draft bill, which will go to a public hearing before another reading in the cabinet and a vote in the lower house of parliament, removes the requirement for two years of hormone therapy and a psychological assessment to switch gender in official records. “This is an historic day after more than 15 years without any legislative progress,” Equality Minister Irene Montero told a news conference. “We send a strong message for the protection of LGBTI people,” she said, referring to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community. The “self-ID” draft bill sets age limits, with 14- to 16-year-olds needing parental approval, after parliament’s rejection in May of a proposal from a group of political parties to give children total freedom to lega...

Russia Accused of Threatening Dutch warship Again.

Image
Russia has downplayed claims from the Dutch authorities that there was "no justification whatsoever" for the "aggressive act". Dutch authorities say Russian fighter jets armed with air-to-surface missiles threatened one of their navy ships in the Black Sea. The Dutch Defence Ministry said  Russian  fighter jets repeatedly flew low over the ship and carried out "mock attacks" off the coast of Crimea last week. The Dutch ship Evertsen had been patrolling the area alongside HMS Defender. Russia said the British ship was  forced to flee  the area last week after their warships fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs. Britain has denied that account and insisted the ship wasn't fired upon. Dutch defence minister Ank Bijleveld-Schouten called the Russian actions against the Evertsen "irresponsible." "Evertsen has every right to sail there," she said. "There is no justification whatsoever for this kind of aggressi...
